This collection of nine pieces is a symbolic completion, honoring balance and timelessness as it mirrors the symbolism of the number nine. In Chinese, the number nine is pronounced “jiu,” which also means “long-lasting.” As the highest single digit, it represents the highest level of mortal happiness, longevity, and good luck. One digit away from the representation of the higher energy, this collection of nine expressive works uses red hues to convey the outpouring of emotion and expressions before a part of someone dies in order for them to be born anew.
“Heart was keeping time” and “Where there be, Knowhere” convey a sense of maturity and harmony. Of knowing. Of everyone giving each other their space to be themselves but not yielding and being a whole person themself. These works explore greater depth, textures, and fluidity than the other works in this series, particularly “Where there be, Knowhere.” The details in hard lines and crack-like texture elegantly conveys the volume and well-worn nature of a fully-developed character. In contrast, the streaky, not-fully-formed character is in movement on top. The works portray the dichotomy between who someone is and who they are all becoming, and how all of that merges to become who someone is. It is simply not possible to have one without the other. The core you, the works convey, is consistent and central, guiding the flow from the “were” to the “now”.
